YouTube prepares 50 series to premiere on its premium platform in 2019
YouTube is increasing the programming for its Premium service, according to its head of content for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Luke Hyams, at the Edinburgh Television Festival.
“We have had more than 65 shows and movies since the service was launched in 2016, and we have 50 shows to launch in 2019,” said Hyams, who was an executive at Disney, and also revealed that his team is still in the process of programming.
Among the shows mentioned, figure ‘Origin’, revealed during the Comic-Con in July and about which we discussed previously. It is a science fiction drama by the same producers of ‘The Crown’, starring Tom Felton and Natalia Tena, known for their respective roles in the Harry Potter saga.
Other of the series highlighted by Hyams is ‘Becoming God in Central Florida’, a black comedy starring Kirsten Dunst, a British reality reality show called ‘The Sidemen Show’, a docuserie on artificial intelligence narrated by Robert Downey Jr. still untitled – and the show ‘Will Smith: The Jump’, in which we will see the ‘Prince of Rap’ star celebrate his 50th birthday by bungee jumping from a helicopter from the Grand Canyon, as a challenge for charity .
On comedies, Hyams said they are looking for a half-hour series format, more than traditional sitcoms. “We will not do many stand-ups or specials, although maybe that can change,” added the executive.
Hyams revealed that the company is especially interested in “things with social impact that are entertaining,” such as Priyanka Chopra’s upcoming documentary series “If I Could Just Tell You One Thing,” in which the actress talks with inspiring figures and asks them and asks for advice that can change the world.
YouTube will produce original content in Mexico, Japan, France and Germany
YouTube is planning to create original content on the international market, including countries such as France, Germany, Japan, Mexico and India to increase the number of users to their new paid subscription service.
The programming will be distributed in various genres such as documentaries on music, reality shows, talk shows and series, according to Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s original director of global programming. They will be produced in their respective local languages and subtitled or dubbed for international markets.
Some of these contents will be exclusive to YouTube Premium, the paid service previously known as YouTube Red, while other shows will be available for free but with advertising.
“We are targeting markets where we believe we have tremendous subscriber potential,” said Daniels. YouTube has already tested this strategy in countries like South Korea and India. In South Korea a reality show was released on the k-pop band Big Bang, which increased the number of clients outside the country by 50%.
In the case of India, the success program is a talk show about cricket, the star sport of the country, called ‘UnCricket’ and has performed “beyond expectations”, in the words of Daniels.
YouTube is currently competing with Netflix, the world’s leading streaming service, which has planned to have at least 700 original shows and films this year, of which 80 would be produced outside the United States.
Likewise, Amazon has been trying to approach new markets, among which stands out the deal signed at the beginning of the year with the Mexican channel Televisa for the production of several series in Spanish.
At the moment, YouTube does not plan to develop more children’s content, since, according to the director, that type of content does not increase subscriptions. Daniels added that more information will be revealed in the coming weeks.
