In recent years a few mobile applications have emerged – such as Yuka, Nukula or Coconut – allowing to know in depth the nutritional information of all types of food and supermarket products, simply scanning their barcode with the smartphone camera.
Now an application called SAPPI: Animal Nutrition Facts transfers this utility to pet food.
Thanks to this tool, users can decrypt the labeling of feeding products for dogs and cats, with the purpose of comparing alternatives, make better decisions and improve eating habits.
In addition, the application facilitates access to a community that connects professionals and managers, for the exchange of information of interest, products and services.
The co-founders of Sappi are Ana Parellada and Toni Ayuste. Ana, CEO is a professional of the world of animal welfare with a decade of experience. The target of tandem is to provide value to society and encourage conscience in those responsible for pets, helping them to make better decisions regarding the nutrition of their best friends.
The drivers of it define Sappi as “an animal welfare movement” with the APP as the first step of it.
How SAPPI works
Through an objective formula, the application evaluates different parameters to establish their ‘sappiscore’. In its calculation system it is based on the data provided by the brands, uncovering those ingredients that are not easily identifiable on the labeling.
From Sappi, they have divided the food processing into 5 large groups, according to their types and the final quality of the product. Thus, a specific weight is awarded within the formula. On the other hand, they have also established assessment criteria for the composition of food according to the parameters established by Fediaf (Europe) and Affco (USA).
“While freshest and higher quality are food, there will be greater bioavailability of all its nutrients and less need to add artificial components,” they point out.
Sappi APP is located in Phareta Beta and is available for download by Android through Google Play. Very soon, the version for iOS will also be launched.
