We were with spot, the robot dog of Boston Dynamics, and so it works

The name of Boston Dynamics sounds strongly, especially after being acquired by Hyundai. But if for something the robotic company is known is by spot, a quadruped robot with a dog-shaped that now arrives in Spain by Plain Concepts.

This Spanish company will offer customized and mixed software solutions and integrated with the robot to companies of different kinds.

We met a spot copy (which they have baptized as SPOC) at the Plain Concepts offices to find out how it works and what their main applications are in the industry.

Climb stairs and dodge objects

The first thing that catches attention when you see spot is its size, but above all the agility with which it moves. The robot can go up and down stairs with total ease, as well as avoid obstacles along the way.

It has a battery with which it is capable of operating for 90 minutes or traveling 5 kilometers without loading. It is not very fast (its speed is 1.6 meters per second), but it is designed for tasks that do not require speed.

Mainly this robot is focused on security and dangerous infrastructure inspections, such as reviewing cities sewer or remote management in the industry. As with drones, SPOT needs to be controlled by an operator, although it is possible to automate routes to do them alone.

In Plain Concepts, they explain that companies can choose sensor and hardware settings that the dog carry over, which will depend on the use that is being given. It is possible to add more cameras (carries six integrated by default) microphones, gas detection sensors, 360 degree cameras, lidar sensors and up to a robotic arm to grab objects and open doors.

The company also integrates with SPOT its own remote tool that uses mixed reality technologies so that it is possible to operate SPOT remotely and with glasses VR HOLOLENS 2.

Spot began selling by 2020 at a price of $ 74,500 (about 64,000 euros to current change). At the moment, the names of the companies interested in acquiring Spot and the Plain Concepts solution are not known, but they assure that there are from large energetics and construction companies to an important wine cellar.
